I were thinking about getting some chickens for eggs, but I was wanting to try growing our own feed for them. Any suggestions on what is fairly easy to grow that they can get good protein from?

Chronic egg laying is a health problem in birds, not something we should be encouraging or artificially selecting for. If egg laying is allowed, it could very possibly kill them. Looks pretty painful too.

Most birds get their protein from scratching around outside and not being left in cages. I'm not sure a plant based feed would provide much protein. Most people here in the central US buy laying pellets for their hens, which provides many nutrients the hens need for egg production.
